YES that's right there is a new drawing. Well new-ish. If you were a fan on facebook you might have seen this last week (lucky you?). I was experimenting with textures in this one and kinda went a bit overboard with the photoshop brushes in this. I just love grass. And clouds. Maybe too much. The clouds in this are so overdone XD I'll fix them...one day....maybe.

I've decided I am possibly the worst blogger ever. Even just thinking about writing a new blog exhausts me. I am just always so busy...I can never find the time to do all these little things let alone draw something epically amazing. I think in the big website overhaul (which is now looking to be somewhere late this year) I will stop calling this place a "blog" and instead call it a "news" page. Good idea? No? Sigh.

Anyway I know this drawing could do with a lot of improvements. I have already over-edited it to death. Possibly over-edited it too much...but at least I had fun drawing it and that's what counts right?

...you draw from a wildly absurd imagination wanting to do 10000 different things at once:

[singlepic id=1218 float=none]

I had high hopes for this drawing. But I think this could have gone a LOT better. This was really another experimental piece though, because I wanted to try a few things out and I needed a dummy test.

One of the things I did differently was draw all this entirely in grayscale first, then coloured it later with layers in Photoshop. I'm not sure I am entirely happy with this process, though it was really good for when I couldn't get the right colour combos right. It was an interesting experience, which I may try again in future when I get stuck. And I did get stuck a LOT in this piece. Mainly because I was using a vector of a robot which some of you might remember from my 'Lonely Cloud' layout I did ages ago. Well I really wanted to do a revamp of him because he's just so cute and all....but combining him with a TREE and painted CLOUDS? Painful.

Let it be known right now I really dislike drawing trees ;_; So many strokes. So little time. So I first started off with a blocky shape. Then I somehow had this idea that using a brush I made in PS might fix it because it looked like a pile of macerated chicken meat at this point. Yeah not good. So I was using a sub par tree half way through this and scrapped it soon after I realised it just looked like absolute junk. And I redrew the leaves for the millionth time to match the clouds. And added some line work later because it just looked like it needed it. All in all, I think I'm pretty happy with how the tree turned out but as I said before, I think this could have been done so much better ;_;

I also tried a different way of drawing clouds. More blocky and precise, less "chalky" blobs. I think I like the clouds the best in this actually but again, so many things I can see wrong with them  xD

The main idea behind this painting was to include the five elements from Chinese culture. So there's fire, earth, water, metal and wood that is supposed to be in this, all working together, making up the universe. I know it's just too deep for this drawing, but I needed something to draw all this together.  The only flaw is I made the fire miniscule. They're supposed to be in those illuminated hanging globes but obviously they just look like hanging light bulbs in most views except +10000% zoomed in  Oh well.

Colouring this was another thing which took AGES to do. I guess mainly because it started off as monochrome but damn I even had to adjust the levels and contrast a lot which I really shouldn't have had to do XD Guess you live and learn from experience lol.

And now this is finally finished (I've been working on this in between bouts of playing Theme Hospital - sad i know but SO ADDICTIVE), I can finally work on this cool other project I really want to blog about in my next post. It's something I've had in the works for a while but I've been experimenting with it a lot as well and yes it has something to do with that vector I keep going on about. It's really simple actually and it's hardly got any paths at all. But I think it has potential :)

I also recently just got reminded about this cookbook I made last year for some reason:

Cookbook

And it's reignited my need to design pretty book layouts. So I've decided I'm going to start designing some crazy recipes when I get even more time..just coz! So yeah. I'm pretty excited about it, I have a lot of ideas. ;)

Tue, 11 Sep 2012 07:22:53 -0700 WOOO NEW LAYOUT TIME http://ephereal.posterous.com/wooo-new-layout-time-23893 http://ephereal.posterous.com/wooo-new-layout-time-23893

hehehe I know right. FINALLY. A NEW LAYOUT!!! HALLELUJAH. I feel like this deserves cake or something.

Redesigning this website was such a pain. For a layout which looks so incredibly simple and minimalistic, this is probably one of the most intensive layouts I've ever worked on ;_; Not because it's overly complicated...I just hadn't designed anything this complex and functional in ages. Plus I'd forgotten bits of code here and there, AND I had to learn a lot of new CSS3 and HTML5 to make this layout as spiffy and pretty as it is. Soo I've learnt a lot in the process, picking up a lot of new coding knowledge and insights, which is always a good thing!

Well now that that's over I can actually say I'm pretty happy with how this layout turned out. It's simple, clean, easy to read and elegant, pretty much the look I was going for. If you might remember a few months ago (yes it's been that long) I said I was working on a layout featuring 7 new illustrations (yep..what the hell was I thinking?). This was after I viewed this design here and was utterly amazed at how awesome it was. I then did a bit more research and turns out this thing called Parallax layouts are all the rage at the moment. Well...turns out parallax layouts aren't actually the best for portfolios. Well I don't think so anyway. I was halfway through designing my now scrapped layout, all the wh ile wondering how I was going to fit all my content into a 400px box. But there you go. I get way too ahead of myself sometimes.

I might post the failed layout later on when I have time. I dunno. It's kinda embarassing...kinda like works in progress. It's an idea I might revisit sometime in the future. But for now, I can happily say I am totally satisfied with what I made and how this turned out. More than anything I'm happy the layout doesn't overwhelm the content which is one of my pet hates when designers try to get too wacky and end up ruining their message at the same time.

I got a load of sites and creators to thank for helping me create this new layout. All of which I will link to over here.

I'm also pretty proud to say this layout is 'responsive'. I learnt this word a few weeks ago (yep I know that's how much behind the times I was), but it was one of the most important things I prioritised in redesigning this website. Because optimising sites for mobiles is now a pretty big thing. For real. I myself hate browsing websites featuring an overload of panning and scrolling not to mention loading times.

I'm actually quite surprised IE rendered this website quite well from the get-go. I didn't really have to do much at all but change a few CSS things here and there. In compatibility mode it looks like crap but really, if you're using that old a browser, you really shouldn't be on the internet.

This website WAS also standards compliant...but you know how hard it is to make sites validate when you use a load of plugins? XD Yes. Very hard.

I'm still in the process of updating my art and works here and there so some galleries might look a bit empty or dusty. I'll be getting to that sometime later in the week when I get more time (seriously, there are never enough hours in a day).

In the meantime, here's a sketch of something I am planning on digitally drawing in the very near future!! (yep I am still working on that vector...it has taken me ages :()

Thu, 30 Aug 2012 08:34:19 -0700 Alone Together http://ephereal.posterous.com/alone-together-8398 http://ephereal.posterous.com/alone-together-8398

So this is a drawing I did based on a sketch I did a few years ago (there's a link in my gallery somewhere in the traditional art). I always wanted to make it into a digital drawing and finally just got around to it. So this drawing. So much editing. So many colours. SO many glows. Have I said how much I like glows? If there is a reason why I have stopped doing vector art in the past few weeks it is because glows just don't work as well with vectors as they do with massively saturated photoshopped drawings. It's just....SO GOOD.

Anyhow this was a pretty good piece for experimenting with textures in Photoshop. I never realised how something so simple as changing the brush scatter could affect the overall look....hah. I wanted to keep this piece illustrative/cartoonish so some elements in this are very precise. Others..are all over the place. But tbh I kinda like it that way. It's like a storybook effect, you know? Getting perspective right in this was a bitch. There is still so much I could edit out of this but I have to stop myself at some point. Actually I might just touch up the colours tomorrow when I get time...

I have also realised I really REALLY like shading and painting stuff in Photoshop. It's so relaxing and you can actually see stuff happening on the screen really quickly (yes in case you haven't realised I am REALLY impatient when it comes to certain things). I have not actually used Photoshop to colour or texturise my drawings since a few months ago so it is quite a learning curve for me. But wow it really makes a difference right? I mean I still loovee vectors but playing with textures in Photoshop is so much fun.

But now after I've done this I have a mad craving to do some pure vector artworks. I have a few ideas in mind. Well tonnes actually. I'm like an ideas factory. The only problem is capacity and time (but you guessed that already). Look out for it. SOON!
